Doctors Askhan Javid and Thomas Minkov started the Junction’s newest dental office – AT the dentist Junction, in June 2023. The two are Toronto natives but didn’t meet until they studied dentistry in Ireland at University College Cork. Spending their formative years living and studying together led to Thomas and Askhan having some mutual hobbies, such as a love of travel, an interest in obscure musical genres, and cooking delicious food! On returning to Toronto, Thomas and Ashkan realized that all the dental clinics looked and felt the same and that the concept could use an update for the 21st century! So, they decided to start their clinic from the ground up, providing a different experience and reflecting their vision.
The vision for AT the dentist is simple but profound: to create value for the patient based on four fundamental principles: appearance, care, transparency and community. Entering the clinic, you’ll be met with a calming, beautiful interior designed to make you feel like you have walked into one of their homes. Every element in the office brings an equal part of Thomas and Ashkan and connects to the people who helped them on their journey. The interior design and cabinets are the work of family friends of Dr. Askhan, while longtime friends of Dr. Thomas created the art, logo, and website. As you wait for your exam, x-ray, cleaning, or teeth whitening, the calming environment guarantees a great experience and might even make you forget you’re at a clinic.
AT the dentist prioritizes patient education so you can take charge of your oral health. In addition, everyone gets access to the highest quality care with the best technology, up-to-date treatments, and digital patient files. Thomas and Ashkan are committed to eco-friendly practices and using sustainable products to reduce waste. They also provide full-price transparency for every procedure they do to empower patients. Dentistry prices are set by the governing body in Ontario, creating mystery and a lack of information for patients. AT the dentist pulls back the curtain by listing prices on the website for all to see, and to make dental care more accessible, a coverage membership plan for anyone who doesn’t have dental insurance is available as an innovative way to make care more accessible for everyone.
The final component of AT the dentist is community. Thomas and Askhan chose the Junction because they wanted to belong to a community where everyone helps each other. Knowing that a rising tide lifts all boats, the clinic is determined to support local artists and fellow small businesses by collaborating and building relationships. Inside, you’ll find many examples; the uniforms are designed by a local tattoo artist and printed by a local printing shop. Plus, they sourced all the art and plants from local businesses to enhance the thoughtful interior. AT the dentist also offers a subscription plan to staff at local businesses for a lower cost. And this is just the start! Thomas and Ashkhan are always looking for more companies and locals to work with to make the clinic a unique community hub, so be sure to reach out!
They also love to support local businesses whenever possible. With so many options, it’s hard to know where to start, but Thomas and Askhan love going to Rois Cream, My House, Chica’s Chicken and Carmelita’s. They love to cook, so they always go to Petti Fine Foods for anything pasta-related. They have nothing but good things to say about owner Stefano and know that he stocks the best fresh pasta in the city.
