Brian Vu has been running Latre Art and Style at 3020 Dundas Street West in the Junction since 2014. With a focus on bringing in high-quality, natural and stylish clothing from far and wide, Latre has been a fixture of the Junction fashion landscape for many years. We caught up with Brian for a quick chat about his store, his philosophy for finding great pieces, and some news to look out for.
Q: Tell us about your business. What do you offer, and what sets you apart?
Brian Vu (BV):
We are a boutique unisex clothing store focused on quality, natural materials, and style. Our in-house line is made right here in the Junction. We also carry original workwear pieces from Japan and France.
Q: Why did you choose to open your business in the Junction? What drew you to this neighbourhood?
(BV):
I have an art background and have always loved style. When the shop first opened, it primarily carried indigo-dyed clothing that I hand-dyed. It was an intensive labour process, so I shifted to sourcing indigo garments from Japan, France, and Africa, which still make up an essential part of Latre’s offerings today.
Q: What inspired you to choose this location in particular?
(BV):
John Baker from @mjolkshop encouraged me to join the Junction community when I was looking for a space. I’ve always found the neighbourhood open-minded and supportive of new business ideas.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
(BV):
I come in early and do my best to enjoy my time and be productive. Fortunately, I can do that most of the time.
Q: Can you share an interesting or surprising fact about your business?
(BV):
Latre used to be located closer to Vine Street before moving to our current location years ago.
Q: What’s your favourite part about being a member of the Junction business community?
(BV):
I love how community-focused everyone is.
Q: What are your hopes or plans for the future of your business?
(BV):
My biggest goal is to keep my business in the Junction for as long as I can.
Q: Do you have any special offerings or holiday suggestions you’d like to share?
(BV):
