Bringing a classic Italian gelato experience with a modern twist to the Junction, newcomers Ajay Fry and Zaira Gaudio opened More Gelato at 392 Pacific Avenue earlier this year. Their vision goes beyond scoops and cones—they’ve created a go-to neighbourhood hangout where community and flavour come together. It’s been a whirlwind year for the pair, and we were thrilled to sit down with Zaira to chat about More Gelato’s journey, their delicious menu, and why they chose to put down roots in the Junction. Dive into our Q&A below for all the sweet details!
Q: Tell us about your business. What do you offer, and what sets you apart?
ZAIRA GAUDIO (ZG): We make small-batch, natural gelato in-house using traditional techniques while offering a classic Italian Gelateria experience, with espresso, pastries, and eventually some after dinner libations.
Q: What inspired you to start this business? Was there a particular moment or passion that sparked the idea?
(ZG): 13 years ago, when we first started dating, Ajay wouldn’t stop talking about this Chocolate Cherry Jalapeno ice cream he once had at a video store in Kensington Market years before. After we got married, he gifted me the ice cream attachment for my kitchenaid mixer. One thing led to another, and before we knew it we were running our own business together!
Q: Why did you choose to open your business in The Junction? What drew you to this neighbourhood specifically?
(ZG): We live here! I don’t think there’s a better part of town to live in. I love how the entire Junction community is so strong and supportive – when it comes down to it, I couldn’t imagine spending my days anywhere else.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you? Or is there such a thing?
(ZG): We’re still in our soft open phase right now, but most days we’re up early cleaning the store, setting up the freezer, and making gelato to try to stay ahead.
Q: Can you share an interesting or surprising fact about your business or your journey as a business owner?
(ZG): I have two: first, my father was born in Italy. Second, the part of our store’s name was inspired by my maternal, Irish immigrant grandfather – who, when asked what he thought of any home made dessert, would always say that it ‘tastes like MORE.’
Q: What’s your favourite part about being a member of The Junction business community?
(ZG): Oh my gosh, I have to pick a favourite?? Everyone here is so lovely and supportive, I guess I would have to say that.
Q: Tell us about a Junction business (apart from your own) that you love to frequent. What do you love about it?
(ZG): Absolutely Opticianado. Listen, I love a lot of Junction businesses, but Opticianado had me coming out here when I lived at King and John. They’ve been dressing my face for over a decade, and I will buy glasses NOWHERE else. They only carry indie brands and out of stock vintage, all of their products are unique, and they will never let you leave in a frame that doesn’t suit your face.
Q: What are your hopes or plans for the future of your business?
(ZG): We have some really fun frozen desserts in store, as well as endless ideas for new flavours, stay tuned!
Q: Do you have any upcoming events, special offerings, or exciting announcements you’d like to share with the community?
(ZG): We also have some enjoyable seasonal flavours and desserts planned for the holidays, plus some cool evening events. Everything is still really early for us but we look forward to bringing all our ideas to life 🙂
Just at the beginning of their journey, Zaira and Ajay have plenty of creative ideas coming down the pipe to make More Gelato the Junction’s go-to destination for gelato, drinks, and delicious snacks. Check out their website and Instagram to follow their journey, or better yet, stop by their Pacific Avenue shop to taste the magic for yourself!
