Welcome to The Malabar Coast.

This Passageway is inspired by Kerala, a region in southern India known for its lush landscapes, layered histories, and rich artistic traditions. The figures surrounding you draw on classical dance forms such as Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, where gesture, costume, and expression are used to tell stories across generations. Above you, suspended fabrics echo the movement of monsoon rain, an essential part of life in Kerala. The tactile elements in front of you reference textiles and carved surfaces found in traditional architecture, inviting you to notice texture, pattern, and form. This Passageway reflects a personal connection shaped by migration and memory. It offers an interpretation of culture that is both inherited and evolving. As you move through the space, you are invited to experience Kerala not as a single image, but as a layered story of place, tradition, movement, and identity.

Description

The Malabar Coast is an immersive Passageway inspired by the textures, rituals, and visual language of Kerala, India. Layered with handcrafted textiles such as Kasavu sarees and warm earth tones, this walk-in illustration invites visitors into an experience shaped by memory, migration, and cultural storytelling. Drawing on temple architecture and classical dance forms such as Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, the space offers a visually rich and contemplative reflection on heritage and contemporary identity. While rooted in Kerala, the installation contributes to the broader South Asian Passageway by highlighting how regional traditions, migration, and inherited memory shape contemporary identity.
