Black Passageway
Audio Guide Transcript
Welcome to the Black Passageway. This installation features screen wall partitions that allow you to look through and across different sections of the space. This openness creates uninterrupted views of the cultural displays and invites you to move through the installation with curiosity and a sense of connection. Look above you to see a powerful tribute to Black hair. A ceiling artwork features flowing strands that extend down the walls in a sculptural, three-dimensional form, celebrating identity, creativity, and heritage. To one side, Kente-inspired fabric weaves through the tent’s poles, transforming the structure into a living pattern. This feature wall symbolizes tradition, unity, and the beauty of cultural craftsmanship. Nearby, you are invited to experience elements of Afro-Caribbean culture through a colourful display of carnival-inspired costumes. This interactive, photo-friendly space captures the joy, movement, and celebratory spirit of carnival traditions. Finally, explore a curated wall of masks, framed artworks, and cultural objects. Each piece reflects stories, histories, and artistic expressions from across the Black community. Take your time, move freely, and experience the space from every angle. There is no single path, only discovery.
Description
This Passageway pays homage to the many cultural influences, traditions, and forms of expression found across the Black diaspora. With four partition walls dividing the tent into sections, each area highlights a different visual and cultural element, including Black hair, Kente-inspired textiles, Afro-Caribbean carnival traditions, masks, artwork, and symbolic objects. Designed for openness and fluid movement, the installation invites visitors to move freely through the space, look through the screen wall partitions, and experience the Passageway from multiple perspectives.
