Pi Co. Pizza Bar
Installation Concept
This piece explores migration as a search for belonging, inspired by the personal search that brought the artist to Toronto. Toronto is not only home to people from all over the world, but also to many species of native turtles that migrate back to the area every year. This includes the four turtle species depicted in this installation: Snapping Turtle, Blanding’s Turtle, Midland Painted Turtle, and Spotted Turtle (of which, the latter two are endangered species). As a recent immigrant, the artist also felt it important to acknowledge and honour First Nations people, to whom this land is known as “Turtle Island”. The muskrat, the woman, and the four turtles allude to essential figures in the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee Creation Stories. With all these parallels, this inviting, fun, and surreal mural pays homage to this neighbourhood and its original inhabitants, while celebrating the artist’s new home.
